These opportunities to asist Haitians have come to the region office:
1. Haitians Arriving at Fort Dix in New Jersey: The Red Cross is accepting volunteers to help with people form Haiti that are being brought to Ft. Dix/McGuire. One of the needs is for French speaking interpreters. Contact either Donna Haines (

) or Bill Rohrer (

) at FBC Mt. Holly.
2. ABWM - White Cross: oller bandages are needed in Haiti as well as the Congo. So this is a plea for roller bandages. I am asking that everyone do 3” x 10 yds.for Haiti and follow the assignments given for 2009 – 2010 for Congo. BOTH AREAS are very important. Last years the roller bandage supply going to Congo was down so they too continue to be in great need. Contact Gail Gillespie for additional details (

AN UPDATE LETTER: ABCNJ RWANDA MINISTRIES |

Even as the world mobilizes to assist the Haitian people in the aftermath of the earthquake that has devastated their country, we must not forget about our ongoing ministry to others who have suffered and need our compassion and friendship. ABCNJ’s relationship with Rwandan Baptists and our work on their behalf in Rwanda and Uganda, continues. Here is an update on a number of important developments.
Baptist Friendship Kampala
In November 2008, a team of ABCNJ pastors (Michael Klemick, Peter Ely, Michael Feicht, Lee Spitzer) met with several Rwandan Baptist refugee families in Kampala, Uganda. In response to our expressions of concern and solidarity, this group, along with other families, organized a community they call “Baptist Friendship Kampala.”
In cooperation with ABCUSA International Ministries and the Baptist Union of Uganda, ABCNJ churches in 2009 began fundraising efforts to provide educational scholarships for the children of this group. There are about 100 children (from elementary to college levels). Our scholarships pay for tuition, meals and uniforms. So far, we have donated about $10,000 in aid. This is an ongoing need – and we would urge your church to “adopt” one or more children. For between $200 and $800 a year (depending on age level), you can meet this need for a child in Kampala. Donations can be made by writing checks to ABCNJ and code it for Kampala Rwandan Education. This is the perfect Vacation Bible School project!
A Mission Trip Opportunity: Uganda in 2010
Rev. Charles Jones, IM Area Director for Africa, is planning to visit Uganda in October 2010 and is inviting ABCNJ members to accompany him. Plans are still in the works, but we do have confirmation that October 17-19 will be key dates for worshipping in BUU churches and meeting with members of the Baptist Friendship Kampala. If you are interested in being part of this mission team, please contact Judy Hart.
AEBR President Andre Mfitumukiza’s Visit to ABCNJ
The Association of Evangelical Baptists in Rwanda currently operates the eye clinic ABCNJ helped to establish. AEBR President Andre Mfitumukiza has accepted our invitation to visit ABCNJ churches in September 2010 and to be the luncheon speaker at the ABCNJ Annual Session on September 25, 2010. We will soon be working on his schedule. If you would like to invite him to your church, please contact Judy Hart.

ABCNJ Endorses the Penny Project |

The Public Mission Committee of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey is encouraging all of the regions churches to participate in the Penny project. Funds raised by the donating of pennies can be used by your local church or donated to the region's ABCNJ Anti-Poverty Grant ministry. Each year, the Public Mission Committee provides grants to ABCNJ churches that are engaged in creative ministries to alleviate poverty.
Some churches are already participating; if your church is already involved, please let the committee know! Christ Congregation in Princeton is one such church. Owen and Julia Simon are standing beside their church's Penny Jar!
The Penny Project seeks to raise awareness of the extent of child poverty throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, and support for programs and ministries responding to the needs of children in poverty. Inspired by the example of the youth of First Baptist Church in New London, N.H.—who raised 60,000 pennies to represent the number of children living in poverty in their state—National Ministries is encouraging the youth of American Baptist Churches USA to raise 14 million pennies to represent the number of children living in poverty in the United States and Puerto Rico.
If your group would like to be part of The Penny Project, use the menu to the left to see who is already involved, register your group, and download the resources you need to get started in this nation-wide effort.
If you need additional information click here.
Download and listen to the podcast (17.9MB MP3) of the Rev. Lisa Harris, National Ministries' acting coordinator of Children's Ministries. Share in her excitement about The Penny Project.

Central Baptist Church in Palmyra this weekend hosted Eastern University's student chaplains for a retreat. Pastor Wes Allen organized the yearly event. The University Chaplain, Dr. Joseph B. Modica, also participated.
It was my privilege to share my testimony on Monday morning at their closing worship service.
The students took communion and visited various worship centers to express their faith.
One table was dedicated to Haiti.
The students wrote prayers and gave an offering, which was dedicated to ABCNJ's Haiti Crisis Relief Fund.
