Mr. Donald “Smitty” Smith Announces His Retirement

Mr. Donald “Smitty” Smith

It is with deep gratitude and respect that I announce the forthcoming retirement of our friend and colleague, Mr. Donald “Smitty” Smith.  After 24 years of faithful service as Director of Baptist Camp Lebanon, Mr. Donald Smith will be retiring effective April 30, 2020. Don, affectionately called “Smitty," has been an invaluable team member of ABCNJ for 31 years.

Don’s journey with Baptist Camp Lebanon has truly been remarkable. He began in 1989 when he was hired as Site Manager.  Then in 1995, after the retirement of the previous director, Rev. Dr.William LeConey, Don was named as Acting Director. After serving in that capacity for a year, on November 2, 1996, Don was called to be the Director of Baptist Camp Lebanon.

Smitty’s passion and heart for creating a culture and community that brings children and youth back year after year and generation after generation has been the stronghold of Camp Lebanon. One of the biggest gifts that Smitty and Katie, his wife, have given to camp has been their love, generosity and commitment to Camp Lebanon.

“Over the past 31 years I have had many memories that have impacted and brought joy to my life in this ministry,” states Smitty.  He and Katie, began a Primary Mini-Camp, a half-week session designed for first time away from home campers, which continues to be offered today. He shares that the proudest moments of his ministry with Camp Lebanon have been seeing the campers give their lives to Christ and grow into adults. “Many of the campers that have come to Camp Lebanon have gone on to be pastors, missionaries and leaders in their churches and communities.”

Smitty’s joyful disposition and gracious hospitality have been invaluable as he welcomes various church groups and community groups to retreat at Camp Lebanon. In addition, Smitty has made and overseen many repairs and renovations at the Camp. He has been involved in the construction of the new Harker building, which he hopes to see completed in the very near future.

One of Smitty’s favorite places at Camp Lebanon is the Green Cathedral, a beautiful outdoor sanctuary.  Smitty describes it as a piece of heaven at Camp Lebanon.   A retirement celebration will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2020 at Camp Lebanon ending with a service of thanksgiving at the Green Cathedral.  Details will be shared in the coming weeks.

Please join me in blessing Smitty and Katie and wishing them a wonderful and well-deserved retirement. We rejoice with them as they embark on a new journey.
