American Baptist Churches of New Jersey Relocating to New Regional Office

During a recent meeting held by the Council of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey, a unanimous vote of affirmation was passed to relocate the ABCNJ Regional Office to Westfield, New Jersey. The Rev. Timothy Joyce, ABCNJ President, expressed his enthusiasm for the decision and said, “This move marks a significant milestone, and the decision was made with a deep conviction in God's sovereignty and guidance throughout the process. This is a blessed partnership as First Baptist Church of Westfield continues to be good stewards of God’s provisions, allowing the Regional Office to expand, host meetings, and minister to our churches.”

ABCNJ’s decision to relocate to a new space after nearly 28 years at its current location was not taken lightly.  They embarked on this journey, seeking God's guidance and engaging in numerous conversations, ideas, and possibilities. They continued to trust God and remained hopeful that the suitable space would materialize at the right time. Finding a space and location that would meet the needs and symbolize a new chapter for ABCNJ was essential.

In early 2023, a remarkable opportunity emerged when the First Baptist Church of Westfield decided, after thoughtful deliberation, to transfer ownership of its building to ABCNJ. Following in-depth conversations and discernment, the First Baptist Church of Westfield voted to deed its building to the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey.

The Rev. Miriam Méndez, Executive Minister and Senior Regional Pastor of ABCNJ, warmly acknowledges, “This generous act by the First Baptist Church of Westfield, a key church for the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey, ensures that the facility will continue to be a beacon of hope and support for all. This is also a testament to the strong bond between the church and ABCNJ. With this new opportunity, FBC of Westfield and ABCNJ can look forward to a future filled with shared blessings and continued growth, enriching the lives of many within the broader ABCNJ family."

With the full support of the ABCNJ Executive Committee and Council, ABCNJ has embarked on a collaborative journey with FBC of Westfield. The congregation will continue to share the space and worship in the sanctuary, but ownership will be transferred to ABCNJ.

Mrs. Loucinda Southerland, the immediate past president of ABCNJ, led the early discussions on this transition. She states, “I am delighted to share my excitement about the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey moving its regional offices to Westfield, NJ. God has blessed both FBC and ABCNJ! This move will benefit our Region and staff and enhance our ministries and operations for the kingdom of God.”

The First Baptist Church has relocated its offices to the lower level of the building, and ABCNJ will occupy the offices on the main level. The move to our new location is expected to take place in late April or early May 2024. Official move date, along with the new address and contact information, will be posted on ABCNJ’s website soon. The anticipation of a fresh space is palpable, and we are all eager to see what the future holds for ABCNJ.

A Dedication and Open House are being planned for the Fall of 2024.
