About the Lulu Fleming Scholarship
The American Baptist Churches of New Jersey (ABCNJ) is partnering with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) to help our best and brightest minds shine! Two years ago we formed a partnership to establish an ABCNJ/UNCF scholarship fund. We are committed to mentoring and developing leaders to be ready and relevant for the future. Today’s students are tomorrow’s teachers, doctors, artists, and ministers. They will educate our children, care for our well-being, lead our congregations, and remind us of the beauty found in the world. In 2020 we will endow the ABCNJ/UNCF Lulu Fleming Scholarship, named in honor of Dr. Louise Celia Fleming, who was the first African American Woman to be appointed for career missionary service by the Women’s American Baptist Foreign Missionary Society in 1886. This Scholarship will be awarded to deserving ABCNJ youth each year at our Annual Session.
To support this new scholarship, ABCNJ is hosting the Helping Minds Shine benefit luncheon at the Rutger’s Club in New Brunswick, on Saturday, February 22, 2020. Our goal for this benefit is to raise $10,000, and we are asking that each church send at least two representatives to attend—one adult (Educator) and one youth (Scholar of Tomorrow). These representatives will be recognized during the program.
